Christmas Day, 2006

Five o'clock AM, fresh coffee and a Christmas cigar. Went to church in Nevis yesterday late afternoon for a candlelight service. Back to the lake for ham, glazed carrots, beans and lefse.

Made a few holiday telephone calls last night, the most important of which was to Andy, our 24 year old son who serves in the Navy and is stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, or GTMO as it's called. We have not seen him since August of 2005. Never in the previous 24 years did I ever imagine not seeing one of my sons for that period of time. Andy has never been a great communicator, either in writing or verbally, so we know precious little of what he does or what his life is like down there. I miss him a lot. Since enlisting in March of 2005, Andy has been successively in: Great Lakes, IL; San Antonio; Gulfport, MS (he arrived one week before Katrina); Fort Lewis, WA; GTMO.

Later this morning, will drive 100 miles south to take father-in-law out for Christmas dinner.

One

Christmas Eve, 2006

Sent holiday emails to my AA sponsor and the handful of guys that I sponsor in AA. For the past fifteen years, AA has been one of the most important (if the not the most important) parts of my life.

This Christmas is the first without children for us since 1983. How is it that these progressions in life which have occurred since time immemorial in countless families can seem so unique when one experiences it first hand?

Introduction

This, like most blogs I suspect, is starting without much purpose, other than a desire to leave a mark or record.

The subtitle of the Blog is a super-brief summary of the last 45 years of my life. As a 55 year old suddenly child-free long-married middle class guy, still searching for what I wanna be when I grow up, the idea of blogging seemed a normal progression.

It begins here at Ham Lake, our remote (to most urban types) northern Minnesota second residence. We built this place in 2000. This "place" is a three bedroom lake home (long and relatively narrow, 30 x 50), one and a half story, full walk out basement. We're 100 feet from the lake, on the east side, so the sunsets are fantastic. Although this time of year there is precious little sun. The arc of the sun's path is so far south that it never gets more than about 45 degrees above the horizon.

My wife and I are here for the Christmas holiday. Our oldest son, Andy, is in the Navy. Our other son, Peter, is with his girlfriend for Christmas. Imagine that - he'd rather be with his girlfriend than his parents!
